Where was I?

I know that every now and then I’ll talk about something in a post and then completely forget to ever post an update or mention it again. I know this, so sometimes I’ll read back through old posts, find something, create a post to talk about whatever it was and save that as a draft like writing myself a reminder note. Problem is, I didn’t do more than title it (above) and write “things you forgot to write about” in the body of the post. And now I don’t remember what I wanted to talk about.

Yeah, I’m slick like that.

So… Any ideas? Has there been something I’ve talked about and then left you hanging? Yes? No? You don’t remember either? :)

If no, and aside from school stuff, is there anything you’d like to see me talk about that’s new? Something that you’d love to see me talk about simply because you’d like my take on it? Oh! Let’s add Jazz into that too. He’s been quiet lately.

You know what? I bet that note was to remind me to write this post…

Now that the dust has settled…

Actually, there was no dust because it rained all day on Monday, my first day back at school, and since I had to run all over campus, it was a very soggy, limp hair day kind of experience. No dust, though. And thank God because it would’ve just turned into mud.

I have 3 classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays:

French is my first class and it came with a little snafu on Monday. Apparently, they decided to change the room not just to a different room but to a whole different building. Unfortunately, they let us know via a post-it on the door. Me and 4 others didn’t see that itty bitty note until someone else coming in pointed it out. All of us were late getting to class after that. First day, first class and I’m late. Yay. But we kind of bonded over our dilemma so that was nice.

Algebra is in a lecture hall and I think this is to aid in preventing us from actually learning anything. I don’t like lecture halls. They’re huge, crammed with people, you can’t ask questions or really interact much, and I always leave feeling kind of abused. How can they teach math like that? I’m seriously not looking forward to this. Thankfully, Alec’s excellent at math so I sort of have a tutor all lined up. I know I’m going to need it since we don’t even get the professor teaching us, just his TA and she broke a ruler on the podium to get our attention.

cool smileyI picked up Intro to Fiction Writing on a whim. It’s an elective for the English degree that I’m technically not supposed to take yet, but they let me in because I gave them a copy of Get Me In The Boat, Boys on a Train, and half of Splinters. The professor was all “You know you probably don’t need this class” and I said “Everyone can improve their craft.” {snicker} So I’m bringing the gay romance to my little writing class.

Then I have 2 classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays:

Bowling is a total mixed bag of people, so the people watching right there is fun. I’m not the only one worried about making a fool of myself, so that’s good too. NO ONE likes the bowling shoes and it’s a free-for-all with the balls. I went for the sparkly yellow one :) and then gutter-balled it six times :( It was a little farther down the lane each time it veered into the gutter, though. I’m the only lefty, but seriously, that does not mean you have to duck.

Archery was…interesting. The teacher there is cool, has ginormous biceps, and doesn’t expect any of us to hit a target until sometime in December. Maybe. So no pressure, right? Oh no, there’s pressure. You don’t want to be the one whose arrow snaps wildly up into the air and makes people run screaming. (Not me, btw.) One more reference to Katniss, though, and I’m going to stab someone. I might as well say now that I hate the concept of those books with children murdering children for a gameshow and I saw the movie under duress. I am NOT taking archery to be like that frickin’ chick and I’m hoping the 3 girls who are there for that reason drop out very soon

Anyway… So far, I’m liking MWF days way better than my athletic days, but it is nice to have a break between thinking days and doing days. Obviously, I’ve only had one class each so far (writing this Tuesday night), but I am hopeful that this will be a fun semester.

Today’s the Day

Back to School

Hard to believe it’s already here. Where did summer go?

I wish I hadn’t worked so much. I wish we’d taken more vacations and stay-cations. I wish I’d gone outside more, even when it was 900° with 180% humidity… OK, maybe not that.

I really do wish I didn’t get that gnawing, jumpy, please-let-them-like-me feeling before every class. I wish I didn’t feel like I have to investigate people before I let myself just be me in front of them. I wish I had a friend in every class already. I wish I was taking Cheese Appreciation or Intro to Breathing. {sigh}

I’ll report in during the days ahead when I get the time to talk about classes, people, and the possible changes to my work situation.

Here’s Duke

Have you ever been so lost in what you’re doing that you talk to yourself out loud without realizing it? Apparently, while using the digital chalk to fill in Duke’s furriness, I kept saying, “Fuuuuzzy, fuzzy-fuzzy.”

Jazz thought it was hilarious, and I just sat there staring at him because I didn’t have a clue why he was laughing.

Alternative is a bad word

A bunch of women are going to talk about “Why Straight Women Love Gay Romance” in a book coming out soon. To kick it off someone was sending around a link to Suzanne Brockmann’s facebook page where she has her notes from a workshop on a similar subject that she couldn’t attend recently.

I’m glad people are talking about writing gay characters or subplots into M/F romances and all, but I have an issue with the title of that workshop: “Alternative Romance”. It bugs me like when people call being gay an “alternative lifestyle”. Alternative implies a choice, and what you put in your book is all about choices, but my being gay isn’t a choice. I’d really prefer they call it LGBT Romance if they want to differentiate it from M/F Romance. (I also don’t like calling M/F romances “traditional romances” because it sounds like gay romances are breaking rules.)

Otherwise, I do like what she’s written very much and I’m curious to see what the others in the new book will have to say. I tried to find the book on MLR’s site but couldn’t and it’s not in Goodreads either. The only thing I could find was this article on Jessewave’s with a cover and blurb. Weird since it’s supposed to come out next month…

Has anyone seen a link to the book itself anywhere?

Suddenly, It All Matters to Me

There’s an article in Salon.com called “Ethical Porn” where the interviewer talks to Devon Hunter about his new porn site Anteros Media.

Now I’ve never had a membership anywhere, but I’ve seen plenty of videos both professional and amateur all over the web. It never really occurred to me to look up the actors/models to even know their names let alone get to know them at all. I don’t really know if I should feel bad about that or not. I know I used them. Pre-Jazz ;) I watched porn to learn something, get off, discover fantasies, etc. Nowadays, I watch it sometimes for that middle reason or to understand something I read about like {gulp} sounding. (No on that, thanks!)

Regardless, they did their job, I enjoyed it or didn’t, and we both moved on.

Some things about Anteros that’s supposed to set it apart from other porn companies:

  • One camera and one take, so the actors aren’t on set for like 4 hours, no fluffers or whatever, and it’s more like real-time and real-life.
  • These guys know each other, so they’re comfortable in this situation and attracted to each other.
  • They’re actually gay or bi, so they LIKE what they’re doing with each other.

Suddenly, all these things matter to me, but specifically that last one. A friend of mine wrote something on his blog recently about a video he saw where the one guy didn’t come: he squeezed a bag of something to try and fake it, and people knew it was fake and said so in comments on the site. That makes me wonder what the heck was wrong that he couldn’t come. I honestly don’t want to watch something knowing the guys aren’t into each other or have to fake it. {yuck} That makes me feel a little dirty in a really bad way, like I helped force them do it or something.

Anteros is also doing something I’ve never seen before that’s really kind of cool: there’s this section of the site called “Stories”. You can either read them yourself, or have this very smexy guy read them to you. I’ve never tried an audiobook of m/m before, though I have had my lovery husband read to me a few times ;) I think you’ll recognize one of the authors in there as JP Barnaby.

smooch smileySo yesterday, after watching the preview of Mitch Vaughn and Spencer Williams (who are married, btw) getting it on in a squeaky clean kitchen–which is my favorite place for it, honestly–I bought a little membership when I got home from work so I could see the whole video…and maybe reenact it with my very Spencer-like pirate named Jazz ;)

And I could honestly see the difference. I didn’t need a billion camera angles, it was obvious they’d done this together before, and considering they said “I love you” a couple times, they definitely liked each other a whole lot.

Jazz and I didn’t have any whipped cream, but we did have honey. Takes forever to lick that stuff off and dinner was very late. Thank you, Anteros Media! It was fun.
