Site Updates

I know a lot of people probably read my posts in their email or RSS feed readers, so I wanted to offer up some kind of notice that some things have changed on the site in the last few weeks.

  1. I reorganized the “old blog” post pages because the list was getting kind of long. They’re now under the heading “Historical Info” and categorized into “About Thorny”, “About Family” and “About Love”.
  2. Alec added a new Category (the gray list under the pages at the top of the page) called “Recovery” where he’ll start tagging any posts of his about his recovery processes.
  3. There are 2 milestone countdowns happening: 1 for the estimated arrival of the twins, and 1 for a certain couple’s 2nd Anniversary ;)
  4. WordPress has finally made a widget for Goodreads, so you can see my latest read books now! I know some people have asked for our facebook account to add the Goodreads app, but since it’s an account for 3 people, we kind of can’t do that well. So that’s there in the sidebar now.

gotta be kidding me smileyNow for something I haven’t added and would like opinions on: I’ve gotten a few emails via the comment form asking if I’m real again. Aside from the fact this pisses me off and will get me adding the sender’s email and IP addresses to the blacklist, I’m wondering what the hell is prompting this and whether something bigger is coming. Should I add some kind of disclaimer to the footer? Like the fact this is a personal blog and all opinions are my own (except for those of my commenters) and if you don’t want to drink the kool-aid, don’t effing drink it. Believe me, don’t believe me, I really don’t care, but coming at me and demanding proof of me is wrong and I won’t ever do it. I’m not obligated to share anything I don’t want to share. I am going to protect myself, though, so disclaimer or no disclaimer?

Effeminate Gay Men in M/M Romances

So the thing that was brewing in my brain has settled down and made sense enough that I can share it now. In prepping it, though, I asked for the help of some of my author friends and, therefore, the post is going up over on Chicks & Dicks. Well, and they kinda like me and have promised to look out for me over there :)

Incidentally, the site’s name plays with the words I’m taking issue with in my post. The playing I’m fine with, but the term “chicks with dicks” is where I get really upset and I’m not letting it go this time. Click on over to read my post, This Really Needs to Stop by Thorny Sterling.

Now below is a list of books that I believe feature effeminate gay men with respect and in ways I can relate to. Yes, it’s my personal opinion and yours may differ, but I like these books and I like these characters. I can also identify with them, and just the fact someone wrote about guys like me makes me very happy.

As You Are by Ethan Day Edward Unconditionally by Lynn Lorenz Gambling on Maybe by Fae Sutherland Just for You by Jet Mykles
One True Thing by Piper Vaughn & MJ O'Shea Sno Ho by Ethan Day Strawberries for Dessert by Marie Sexton

There’s a list on Goodreads called Best Gay “Flamboyant” Characters with 78 books listed. Some I agree with and others not so much. (I’ve also realized I’m behind on updating my “read” list…) But I’m glad it’s there at all.

Do you have any additional books that you think qualify as a good representation of effeminate gay men in m/m romances? I’d love to know what those books are and why you think they’re good characters.

Poll Results: How do you like your M/M sex scenes?

The poll was open in the sidebar from May 29 to June 29 and resulted in 341 votes. It was a multiple choice vote so people were able to choose more than one answer. A cookie attempted to prevent repeat voting by the same person.

Here are the results:

  1. Fast Forward – skip, skim, next! — 1% (4 votes)
  2. Sweet – close the door or fade to black please — 5% (16 votes)
  3. Purple prose – tubescent manhoods and quivering channels — 2% (6 votes)
  4. Romantic – love scenes, not just sex — 37% (126 votes)
  5. Graphic – the more detailed the better, sound effects welcomed — 16% (56 votes)
  6. Talkative – you want it? do ya? say my name, boy! — 10% (35 votes)
  7. Bound – someone better be tied up or have a red tushy — 9% (30 votes)
  8. All of the above and whatever else you’ve got! — 16% (53 votes)
  9. Other (see below) — 4% (15 votes)

Other answers as submitted:

  • talkative but not sex talk, I like reading humor, laughter
  • funny/silly
  • non-in love hot sex is good, graphic but not for pages & pages
  • Hot, sweaty, sticky-Hand me a cigarette after
  • Plot relevant
  • romantic scenes that are also graphic
  • Surprise lace undies
  • The sex scene should have plot purpose unless it’s an erotica.
  • written with some purpose to the story, not just for the porn value. :)
  • Must have details that add to plot/characterization or I skip
  • Whatever fits best with the author’s style, but I like them slightly kinky most.
  • Graphic – drawn out, sexy (no sound effects)
  • Depends on the author & the story!
  • Show me different sex position :D
  • I could skip choices 1-3, everything else is good – #’s 5-6 can even be GREAT!

GREAT BIG HUGS to everyone who voted! THANK YOU! :D

My Clothes and My Dad

My post today, the one I was anxious over since I wrote it and mentioned on Wednesday, is actually on Chicks & Dicks right now.

That’s part of why I’ve been feeling like this: Because I’ve wanted to have it happen already, but couldn’t say much since I promised it to them. It’s all about “Living Out with Pride” month over there, and this new thing with my cross-dressing is what I’m coming out with now. So I’m a boy who dresses like a girl sometimes. I’m trying very hard to be brave about it. I’m trying very hard not to ever apologize for being me when it comes to this too. Neither is easy, but I’m trying.

My post on Chicks & Dicks is about “Coming out of the Closet…in Heels” to my dad.

Somebody’s Anxious (i.e., Thorny)

I’m sort of wasting time here. There’s a post going up on the 22nd that’s got me…anxious maybe? Lemme look that up.

anxious |ˈaNG(k)SHəs|
adjective

  1. experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome: she was extremely anxious about her exams.

Oh yep. That’s me. So I’m feeling anxious.

I Helped!

There are 2 posts up on different sites today that I helped with:

  1. What He Says… About Manscaping has opinions from me, Damon Suede, DH Starr, Edmond Manning and Stuart Wakefield about hair or bare. Go on over and share your preference.
  2. Coming Out and Coming In? Which Comes First is a post by Matt & Brad. My only part in it was being a Dick and liaising with the guys to acquire their post for Chicks & Dicks. What they turned in is some really good stuff about being young and gay.

Go check them out! :)
